The team dinner problem
Why most company dinners go wrong in the same three ways, and what to check before booking one in Athens.
A team dinner is a harder booking than a birthday, because the people attending did not choose each other and half of them would rather be at home. The failure modes are consistent and they are almost all about the room rather than the food.
This is what goes wrong, and what to ask before you commit a department to an evening.
It is too quiet
A silent dining room is the worst possible setting for a group who work together. Every conversation is audible to the next table, nobody relaxes, and the evening stays stiff from the first course to the bill.
Somewhere with its own noise solves that without anybody having to try. There is live music here and a DJ booth, and the room carries sound rather than swallowing it, so a table of fourteen is not the loudest thing in it.
If your last one was awkward, the room was probably the reason rather than the people.
It is too loud
The opposite failure is more common and worse, because a team dinner has a job to do. If nobody can hear across the table, you have paid for a meal that achieved nothing.
The room is on two levels and does not behave the same across them. Earlier in the evening the courtyard and the terrace hold a conversation comfortably at a long table. Later the back of the room is louder than the front, deliberately.
The practical advice is the same one we give for every group: if the point is talking, book earlier and ask for the courtyard or the terrace. If the point is the team letting go after a quarter that went badly, book late and sit inside. Those are different evenings and it is worth deciding which one you are buying.
The menu excludes somebody
Every team has a vegetarian, somebody who will not eat raw fish, somebody on a budget and somebody who wants the most expensive thing available. A narrow menu turns that into a visible problem at the table.
The kitchen runs a charcoal grill and a sushi list at once. That is unusual, and it is the single most useful thing about the room for a group of mixed tastes: picanha off the grill, a full vegetarian section, and eight-piece rolls all coexist without anybody feeling catered around. Nobody has to be the person who ordered the sad plate.
Sharing plates work better than individual courses for this. The starters are built for a table rather than a person.
The logistics quietly sabotage it
People arriving from different offices, somebody driving, somebody who will leave at ten and somebody who will not leave at all. This is where a venue either helps or does not.
We are on Brazil Square in Ilisia, five minutes from the Hilton and five from the Megaron, which is an easy instruction to give a group arriving separately. The nearest car park is about 80 metres away at Papadiamantopoulou 26 and Michalakopoulou, open 24 hours. It is independent of us, so we cannot quote what it charges.
We are open until 03:00, so there is no closing time forcing the evening to end before it is ready to. That is usually the difference between a team dinner and a team night.
What we will not tell you over email
How many people fit. We do not publish a capacity and we will not guess at one, because the honest answer changes with whether the group is seated or standing, which part of the room it has and what night it is.
This matters more for a corporate booking than a social one, because you are committing other people's evening and often a budget. A number that turns out to be wrong two weeks before is a genuine problem rather than an inconvenience.
So: send the date, roughly how many, seated or standing, and whether you want part of the room or the whole thing. The form on the events page goes to a person who can answer properly.
A note on expectations
This is not a hotel function room and it does not behave like one. There is a jungle on two levels, a hanging garden on the upper terrace and a giant gorilla on the mezzanine that almost nobody walks past without photographing.
For most teams that is the point: it is memorable without anybody having to organise entertainment. For a formal client dinner where the room should disappear behind the conversation, it is the wrong choice and we would rather say so now than afterwards.
If you are unsure which yours is, the address and the photographs will settle it faster than any description will.
Frequently asked questions
- How many people can you take for a company dinner?
- We do not publish a capacity. The honest answer depends on whether the group is seated or standing, which part of the room you want and which night it is. Send those details through the events form and we will answer properly rather than guess.
- Can a large table actually hold a conversation?
- Earlier in the evening, yes, particularly in the courtyard or on the terrace. Later the back of the room is deliberately louder than the front. If the dinner has a purpose beyond eating, book earlier and ask for the outdoor side.
- Is it suitable for a formal client dinner?
- Often not. The room is a jungle on two levels with live music and a gorilla on the mezzanine, which is memorable rather than discreet. For a dinner where the setting should stay in the background, it is the wrong venue and we would rather say so in advance.
- Where can the team park?
- The nearest car park is about 80 metres away at Papadiamantopoulou 26 and Michalakopoulou, open 24 hours. It is an independent business with no arrangement with us, so we cannot tell you its prices.
- How late can a team dinner run?
- We are open until 03:00 every day, and there is no earlier closing time imposed on groups.
