Athens after midnight

Visitors to Athens tend to plan the evening as though it ended at eleven, because that is when evenings end in most of Europe. Then they find the city has not started yet, and either go to bed early or stay up by accident.

This is how the hours actually run here, and what the choices are once the sightseeing is finished.

The clock is shifted by about two hours

Athenians eat late. Nine is early for dinner and ten is normal. That single fact reorganises everything after it: a bar that looks empty at eleven is not failing, it is waiting, and the same room at one in the morning is a different place entirely.

The practical consequence for a visitor is that arriving somewhere at nine and leaving at eleven means you saw the quiet half of the evening and concluded the city was quiet. It is a very common mistake and it is entirely avoidable by staying an hour longer than feels natural.

The other consequence is that if you want a calm dinner with conversation, early is genuinely better, and you will have the room largely to yourself.

The three kinds of late night

Broadly the city offers three, and they are not interchangeable. There is the bar night, which starts late and has no food in it. There is the music night, where the point is a stage or a booth. And there is the long table, which begins as dinner and simply does not stop.

Knowing which one you are after saves an hour of walking. A room built for the first is a poor place to eat, and a restaurant that closes its kitchen at eleven is a poor place to spend the third.

Athens has plenty of all three, in the centre and increasingly out of it, and the eastern neighbourhoods are where the third kind is easiest to find.

Where the eastern side fits

Ilisia and Pangrati are residential rather than nightlife districts, which is precisely why the long table works there. There is no strip to walk, so nobody is moving between venues every forty minutes. People sit down and stay.

We are on Brazil Square in Ilisia, five minutes from the Hilton and five from the Megaron, which makes the area easy to reach after a concert and easy to leave from. The room is open until 03:00 every day.

What that means in practice is that a table that began at nine as dinner can still be a table at one without anybody suggesting it should not be. That is the whole proposition and it is a different one from a bar.

How the room changes across the night

Early it is a restaurant: the courtyard opens onto the square, the terrace above has the hanging garden, and you can hold a conversation at a table of eight.

After about midnight the balance shifts. There is live music and a DJ booth, the back of the room becomes louder than the front, and the terrace turns into the place people go when they want to hear each other. The two levels stop behaving like one space.

It is worth knowing which half you are arriving into. If you come at nine expecting the second half you will be disappointed, and if you come at one expecting the first you will be shouting. Neither is the room's fault. The late version has its own page with photographs, which explains it faster than this does.

Eating late, honestly

The room is open until 03:00. The kitchen is a separate question and we do not publish a last order time, so we will not print one here. If a late meal is the plan rather than a possibility, telephone on the day and ask what is still running.

That is a genuinely unhelpful answer and it is the accurate one. A guide that told you the kitchen runs until two, on a night when it did not, would have cost you a worse evening than this paragraph does.

What is reliably available late is the shorter end of the menu: the snacks, the sushi list, the four-piece sashimi. Cold plates do not depend on a grill still being lit, which is why they are the things that survive to the end of a service.

Getting home

Athens at three in the morning is not a city with a full transport network running, so the end of the night needs a small amount of thought at the beginning of it.

The nearest car park to us is about 80 metres away at Papadiamantopoulou 26 and Michalakopoulou, and it is open 24 hours, which matters more at this hour than at any other. It is independently run and we cannot tell you its prices.

And if the honest answer is that you want a long dinner rather than a late night, the opening hours and the booking link are the only two things you actually need, and eight in the evening is a perfectly respectable time to arrive.
