How far is Iguazu from the Megaron Mousikis?

Can I eat after a concert at the Megaron?

The room is open until 03:00 every day. We do not publish a last order time for the kitchen, so if you are counting on a full meal late, call on the day and ask what is still running rather than assume.

Is there somewhere to eat near the Hilton before a dinner reservation elsewhere?

Yes, and the cold side of the menu suits it: ceviche, eight-piece rolls, four-piece sashimi. Those arrive quickly because nothing is waiting on the grill, so an hour is enough without anyone feeling rushed.

Where is the nearest parking?

The garage at Papadiamantopoulou 26 and Michalakopoulou, about 80 metres away and open 24 hours. It is independently run with no arrangement with us, so we cannot quote its prices.

What time do you open in the morning?

08:00 every day. The kitchen opens at 09:00, an hour later, so an early arrival can have coffee before breakfast is available.

Eating near the Hilton and the Megaron

The Hilton and the Megaron Mousikis sit a few hundred metres apart on the eastern edge of central Athens, and between them they generate a particular kind of evening: somebody with a fixed time and a short walk, who needs to eat either side of something else.

That is a harder problem than it looks, and the difficulty is almost never the food. It is the clock.

The problem with eating before a concert

A concert at the Megaron starts when it starts. That means dinner has to be finished by a specific minute, and a restaurant that is relaxed about pacing becomes a liability rather than a pleasure.

The honest advice for any venue in this area is to say out loud, when you sit down, that you have a curtain at a particular time. Every decent kitchen will work with that and most will tell you if it is unrealistic. The ones that shrug are the ones to leave.

The other approach is to invert it: have one course before and the actual meal afterwards. Which is only possible if somewhere nearby is still serving when the concert lets out, and that is where the options narrow sharply.

The problem with eating after one

A performance finishing at half past ten empties a few hundred people onto Vasilissis Sofias at once, most of whom have not eaten. Athens is a late city by northern European standards, but late for a kitchen is not the same as late for a bar.

We are open until 03:00 every day, which is the useful part. The part we will not overstate: we do not publish a last order time for the kitchen and we are not going to invent one here. If you are counting on a meal at eleven, telephone on the day and ask what is still running. That is a thirty-second call that prevents a bad evening.

It is a genuinely annoying answer and it is the true one.

Where we actually are

It is a residential square with a park in it rather than a restaurant strip, so the walk ends somewhere that feels like a neighbourhood instead of a concourse. Ilisia runs into Pangrati on one side, and both are places Athenians eat on an ordinary Tuesday.

If you are driving in rather than walking from a hotel, the nearest car park is about 80 metres away at Papadiamantopoulou 26 and Michalakopoulou, open 24 hours. It is independent of us and we cannot tell you its prices.

What to order against a clock

If you have ninety minutes, order from the starters and the sushi list rather than the grill. Ceviche, an eight-piece roll, the four-piece sashimi. Cold plates arrive in the order they are ready and nothing is waiting on a fire, which is the whole trick of eating well against a curtain-up time.

If you have two hours and want the kitchen at its best, the grill is worth the time. Picanha comes out of a charcoal oven and it is not a dish to rush; the fat cap needs the heat to work slowly through it, and hurrying it wastes the cut.

If you are arriving after the concert and want something rather than a meal, the snacks run all evening and the menu does not close down into a short late list. The kitchen stays open, which in this part of Athens is less common than it should be.

Before you go, and afterwards

There is a version of this evening where the restaurant is the interval rather than the destination, and that is a perfectly good use of it. Nobody will mind if you have one plate and leave.

There is also the version where the concert turns out to be the warm-up. The room is on two levels with live music and a DJ booth, and it does not wind down at midnight. If the evening is going that way, what happens here late is a different page.

One suggestion for the Hilton side

If you are staying at the Hilton for several nights, the thing worth knowing is that we open at 08:00, an hour before the kitchen does. Breakfast in a hotel is fine and it is also the same room you woke up in.

A five-minute walk to a courtyard opening onto a park, with the kitchen starting at 09:00, is a better start to a day in Athens than a buffet. That is not a claim about the food; it is a claim about being outside.
